THE 2021 GOLD COAST FLATHEAD CLASSIC

Team Tooney group lined up ready to compete in the Gold Coast Flathead Classic 2021.

NORTH STORM® PROUD SPONSORS OF ADF VETERANS TEAM TOONEY FISHING

This year North Storm® and Ironside Coffee Co. proudly sponsored a great group of mates in the 2021 Gold Coast Flathead Classic.

These mates made up the two teams that are ‘Team Tooney Fishing’!

We were excited to say the least to be onboard with this great crew.

These six anglers made up the two fishing teams, with four of these anglers being Australian Defence Force Veterans.

This rang true for us as we at North Storm® have a family member currently serving in the ADF.

CHARITY OF CHOICE – SWISS 8

As proud veterans and veteran families, both teams chose to represent Swiss 8 at the 2021 Gold Coast Flathead Classic as their charity of choice.

Swiss 8 is a health promotion charity founded by Combat Veterans.

They are disrupting the current, reactive, mental health care model and improving it to be more proactive.

Simply by giving veterans the tools to improve their mental health once they leave the military.

This gives them access to an entire veteran community.

INTRODUCING THE LADS

The teams were led by Heath aka ‘Tooney’ of Team Tooney Fishing.

Other team members were Dave aka ‘The Old Man’, Taula aka ‘Frankiie’, Dale aka ‘DB’, Marty aka 'Kochie' and Joe aka ‘Jesus’.

DAY 1

Everyone was looking the part in their new kit.

All were super keen to hit the water and have a blast for the next few days.

They were fortunate to have some ok weather on the day, with only a couple of light showers coming through.

The first day saw the boys spread across the Gold Coast Broadwater.

Despite the odd shower or two they did land quite a few flatties.

But with that being said the boys lost a few too.

Kochi and The Old man managed to drop a MONSTER, they got it right up to the boat and lost it!

With an eta size of 75cm+, but I guess we will never know of the one that got away!

DB and Jesus managed to land quite a few decent flat heads though.

We heard they also spent a bit of time teaching Frankiie how to use a spin reel.

Incredibly he had never used one before!

He had decided the 2021 Gold Coast Flathead Classic was the place to do it!

Good on him we say for giving it a red hot go.

DAY 2

Day 2 saw the heavens open up before daybreak, and the boys were hoping it wasn’t going to remain that way throughout the day.

Everyone was philosophical about it and in the spirit that is Team Tooney, they decided to make the most of it anyway.

After all, this is fishing right?

So why let a bit of rain stop you from having a go at catching one.

Plus they had their North Storm® bags to keep their gear dry and their Ironside Coffee Co. to kick them off!

Well the good news was that the bad weather didn’t stick around so the boys managed to land quite a few fish which was good to hear.

Tooney managed to snap a rod and get his Tango Shad lure caught up in the ol Mercury outboard.

But in true Tooney spirit and with only a smile on his face we quote ‘Who knew Mercury motors loved Tango Shads?’

Despite the sporadic weather and a broken rod, the boys were still able to catch quite a few flatties in quick succession.

Unfortunately they didn’t manage to land any monsters but everyone was enjoying their day out on the Broadwater regardless.

They did however get plenty of action and all had a blast.

Still one day to go!

DAY 3

Day 3 started out sunny, clear skies and flat seas.

The perfect day for fishing.

With that being said we can’t lie and say it was easy!

This group of lads had more than the typical few on this trip.

After catching quite a few flatties they decided to head back in and wrap up on the last day with a few more cold beverages.

Tooney’s reflection of the day stating ‘the most memorable moment of the day was the boys got to witness Frankiie catch his first fish on the rod and lure.’

Congratulations Frankiie that in itself is a winner!
